Well, I thought I would send this out first thing so you would not be anxiously awaiting my weekly newsletter. First of all I would like to thank all of you for the wonderful gifts I received. They were all very thoughtful. We had a wonderful last two weeks at school, working on monsters and snowmen. This last week we worked on some holiday cards and gifts, watched the Polar Express, ate popcorn and drank (along with spilling) hot chocolate and eating candy canes. Of Course, we did work of reading, math and writing as well. Gifts Galore was a huge success as always. The children had a great time shopping for their families.... and themselves.
Craft day was amazing. You would think it would be crazy, but as I wondered the halls and walked through the classrooms, I saw multi-age children sitting, talking and working together. It was awesome.
I want to thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to work with your children. Each and everyone of them has something wonderful to contribute to our school family. Each has grown so much over the past few months. I feel extremely lucky to have the group of children I have this year. I know I will be missing them by the end of the break!
Oh, I almost forgot....
I sent home a math pack. It is not mandatory that your kiddos do the work, but it would be great to work review some of the pages. Also, I would really encourage reading over the break. So, please create another reading log for your kiddos and have them fill it out. (I just had to get some school work in over the break)
Have a wonderful, relaxing break,
Becky

Newsletter, December 5, 2009
- Help your children stay organized. Go through their home folders each night with them. Take out old materials. Many children are not turning in their homework. The excuses I am hearing from the children are: We were too busy over the weekend. My mom wouldn't let me do it. My dad has it. I forgot. The children not turning in their work are developing habits that will affect their education in the future. Please help them develop positive habits now.
- Help your children with the math homework. This includes making sure they are writing their numbers the write way and answering the questions correctly! We do not want our children to practice doing things the WRONG way. If they do.... they will learn to do it WRONG. We want our children to practice doing things the RIGHT way so they will learn to apply the concepts correctly.
- Make sure your children write their names on their homework. They often do not recognize their own work so they can't figure out which work is theirs. If I can't figure it out and they can't figure it out, they get to do it again!

Storyline:
The children have continued to write in their “travel journals”. The entries and poems they have written are very rich. They are taking on the character of one of the Fritz family members and have written as if they actually experienced the activities on the itineraries! This is where storyline come to life!
Important Upcoming Dates:
November: Pennies for a Cause
Giving Campaign: The PTO is raising funds for our school. This is a onetime donation for the year. Please donate what you can, no amount is too small.
November 20: Lion, Witch and Wardrobe Play at Summit High School.
Nov.23 -27: Thanksgiving Break.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
This is a play put on by BEAT, a local performance company. We will be departing school at 9:05 am on Friday, Nov. 20. Please make sure your child is at school by 8:55 and in the classroom. Please let me know if your child will not be at school. If you feel you can donate $2.00 for the bus that would be wonderful. I am covering the cost of the play with funds given to my classroom account from the Parent Teacher Association (PTO). This is a great example of how your donations to the Giving Campaign are put into use!

Conferences:
I want to thank all of you for attending your child's conference. I am grateful to report that I had 21 conferences! I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with your children. Homework and Take-home Folders
- Take Home Folders need to be returned to school everyday.
- Please make sure you correct you children's work when they are completing homework assignments. Many of the children had mistakes on the last math homework assignment. These mistakes included writing numbers backwards, writing the teen numbers backwards, and making the wrong number of tallies for the number written. By correcting your child's works you have the opportunity to talk about the concepts being covered.
- It is also important to make sure that your child's name is written on the top of all homework papers.
- Please look through your childs folder each night and talk to them about the papers they have brought home. Make this an opportunity to talk to your child about what they are doing in school. This will also help them not turn everything back in the next morning!!! If your childs paper has a star or stamp on it, it should stay at home.
- Poem Folders are due back each Monday.
- Library books are due back to school every Thursday. If you child does not return the library books they will not be able to check out new books.
- Please make sure your child wears the appropriate shoes for PE.

We finished creating the Fritz family and they will be up on the frieze board this week. We also began working on the Map of Bend and the surrounding area. The goal is to have everything up by the end of the week!
Our next field trip will be to Drake Park. We are going to be doing some cast finishing and watching (maybe trying) some fly-fishing. We are planning this walking field trip for Tuesday, October 6. If you are fly fisherman or have experience with cast fishing, please let me know if you would like to help. Even if you don't have experience, let me know, as I will need some volunteers.
Storyline needs: Yellow rafts, canoes and kayaks, paddles and life jackets. No we are not going on the water, but we are going to use them at school for an incident.
